Virtual Workshop: Ethiopian-style Binding

Monday, July 15, 2024. 12-4pm MST / 2-6pm EST.

Zoom link will be provided.

Ethiopian-style binding is a link stitch binding that opens flat with an exposed spine, similar to what many refer to as “Coptic” for its association with early Christian sects in North Africa. Traditionally, this style of book would be made from wood covered in leather. Today, we can make beautiful journals and sketchbooks with board covered in decorative paper and cloth.

This intermediate-level workshop is best for students with some bookbinding, sewing, or general crafting experience.

Materials Needed:

  • 4 bookbinding needles (or similar)

  • Linen thread + beeswax

  • Book board

  • Paper or bookcloth for covering

  • PVA glue

  • Awl

  • Text-weight paper

  • Scissors

  • Self-healing cutting mat

  • Exacto or olfa knife

(A complete list of materials and where to acquire similar items on short notice will be sent when you sign up.)

Price: 4 hours @ $75.00
